Dream It, Do It
1. Now that you have conceptualized your project, what does it look like from the outside?
From the outside it appears as a take on how students of all different backgrounds share differences in privilege, giving the vibe of a very personal and potentially controversial message; who we are and where we are from affects our education. It can come across as preachy due to the nature of its content in having a focus on acknowledgement over application. This is not to say application of certain measures to alleviate the issues of racial inequality is not necessary, more so not as highlighted as the first step to solving an issue, realizing it exists.
2. What problem does this project help to solve?
This project aims to help alleviate the issue of silence on a very chronic and widespread issue in education. Privileges that lead to unfair disparities among racial groups in the school environment are not going anywhere soon and need to be realized in order to help empathize and work with such conditions. It is important all parties from the teachers to the parents understand the reality of the classroom as best as they can in order to work in preventing the further development of racial inequality in education.
3. What is the most ideal way to create this project? What could be done were there no constraints?
The most ideal way would be through audience interaction and discussion as this issue permeates throughout all who have a stake in future of children, that is, all of us. While of course experts in the area of education can have more of an impact on the situation of racial inequality in the classroom, the parents and even students can help as well. Simply realizing the issue helps and so interaction among the audience and presenters can help in showing this is not about any specific group of people but all of us. Were there no constraints much more reformative discussions could be had but as the risk of alienation grows with increased openness in such a forum it seems best to have constraints. Identity is very personal and no one wants to feel targeted in a negative light even when they should be.
4. What are the most likely circumstances you will face in creating this project?
Most likely we will face an awkward beginning as this type of project appears to be new to us. As with anything new the initial venture into it can be bumpy and considering how easily a discussion about race can turn into a heated debate the care and attention to sensitivities must be taken into account.
5. What steps need to be taken to turn the project idea into reality?
We need to create a website and and analyze our sources in order to give a fair presentation on the issues of racial inequality in the classroom.
6. What might be some risks in creating this project? In distributing it? What could go wrong?
The biggest risk is the sensitivity of others. Race is a very important part of many people's identity and therefore it easy to strike someone's emotions negatively. In order to avoid such an instance a careful use of words much be administered.
7. What might be some positive consequences of creating this project?
Potential positives include public knowledge of the subject as well as inspiration to take action in ways that help alleviate the issue.
8.What might be some negative and/or unintended consequences of creating this project?
The greatest unintended consequence could be one of incorrect interpretation. To clarify, the possibility of listeners taking the wrong type of message and therefore only hurting the social justice movement should they parrot what they believe the intended takeaway was
